As of 10 pm on Sunday, Chedeng was already 1,375 kilometers east northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, moving northeast at a faster 35 kilometers per hour from the previous 25 km/h.

The severe tropical storm is heading for the sea south and southeast of Japan, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11 pm bulletin on Sunday.

Chedeng continues to have maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h and gustiness of up to 135 km/h.

It was a typhoon before it weakened into a severe tropical storm on Sunday afternoon. It had reached a peak intensity of 150 km/h on Saturday, June 10.

After Chedeng developed inside PAR last Tuesday, June 6, it stayed far from Philippine landmass.

It did not trigger rain and tropical cyclone wind signals were not raised, though it did cause moderate to rough waters in some seaboards.

Chedeng has also been enhancing the southwest monsoon. And, aside from the tropical cyclone, a possible frontal system north of extreme Northern Luzon on Tuesday, June 13, could cause enhancement of the southwest monsoon as well.

Floods and landslides remain possible in the next few days as the southwest monsoon is seen to bring more rain.

Sunday night, June 11, to Monday night, June 12

  • 100-200 millimeters (mm): Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan
  • 50-100 mm: Metro Manila, Bulacan, Benguet, Occidental Mindoro, northern part of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Antique

Monday night, June 12, to Tuesday night, June 13

  • 50-100 mm: Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan

Tuesday night, June 13, to Wednesday night, June 14

  • 50-100 mm: Ilocos Region

The southwest monsoon enhanced by Chedeng may also bring gusts, or sudden and strong winds, to Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, and Antique on Monday, June 12.

PAGASA added that most of Luzon might still see gusty conditions Tuesday onwards if the frontal system forms and also enhances the southwest monsoon.

As for coastal waters, the southwest monsoon may trigger moderate to rough seas in the northern and western seaboards of Northern Luzon, with waves 2 to 4 meters high, and the western seaboard of Central Luzon, with waves 2 to 3.5 meters high.

PAGASA advised small vessels not to sail in those seaboards on Monday.

Chedeng was the Philippines’ third tropical cyclone for 2023 and the first for June. PAGASA earlier estimated there would be one or two tropical cyclones during the month.

Chedeng’s maximum sustained winds decreased to 110 kilometers per hour from the previous 120 km/h, based on the 5 pm bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Its gustiness eased to 135 km/h from 150 km/h.

Chedeng earlier reached a peak intensity of 150 km/h – referring to maximum sustained winds – on Saturday, June 10.

The severe tropical storm was last spotted 1,210 kilometers east northeast of extreme Northern Luzon on Sunday afternoon, still moving north northeast at 25 km/h.

While Chedeng is set to leave PAR on Sunday night, it may continue causing moderate to rough seas in the seaboards of extreme Northern Luzon.

PAGASA advised small vessels to take precautionary measures as waves could be 2 to 3 meters high.

Chedeng, which developed inside PAR last Tuesday, June 6, did not bring rain to any part of the country and tropical cyclone wind signals were not raised. It has remained far from Philippine landmass.

Chedeng, however, has been enhancing the southwest monsoon or habagat. PAGASA advised the following areas affected by the southwest monsoon to watch out for possible flash floods and landslides:

Monsoon rain

  • Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan

Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms

  • Metro Manila, rest of Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Abra, Benguet, Occidental Mindoro, northern part of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands

The southwest monsoon may also bring gusts, or sudden and strong winds, to these areas:

Sunday, June 11

  • Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas

Monday, June 12

  • Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, northern mainland Palawan, Calamian Islands, Cuyo Islands, Kalayaan Islands, Bicol, Western Visayas

PAGASA said Chedeng’s effect on the southwest monsoon will lessen as it moves further away from PAR, but a frontal system north of extreme Northern Luzon “will continue to mainly enhance the southwest monsoon from Tuesday (June 13) onwards and affect most of Luzon, especially the western and extreme northern portions.”

Chedeng is the Philippines’ third tropical cyclone for 2023 and the first for June. PAGASA earlier estimated there would be one or two tropical cyclones during the month.

As of 10 am on Sunday, Chedeng was already 1,100 kilometers east northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, moving north northeast at 25 kilometers per hour from the previous 20 km/h.

The typhoon is expected to leave PAR on Sunday night.

Its maximum sustained winds decreased further to 120 km/h from the previous 130 km/h, while its gustiness went down to 150 km/h from 160 km/h.

Chedeng earlier reached a peak intensity of 150 km/h – referring to maximum sustained winds – on Saturday, June 10.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) expects the typhoon to be downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Sunday.

Since Chedeng is staying far from the country’s landmass, it is not causing rain and tropical cyclone wind signals have not been raised.

But waters remain moderate to rough in the seaboards of extreme Northern Luzon due to the typhoon.

PAGASA advised small vessels to take precautionary measures as waves could be 2 to 3 meters high.

The moderate to heavy rain being experienced on Sunday is from the enhanced southwest monsoon.

In a separate advisory at 11 am, the weather bureau said the following areas will be affected by the southwest monsoon over the next three days:

Sunday, June 11

  • 100-200 millimeters (mm): Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro
  • 50-100 mm: Metro Manila, Bulacan, Abra, Benguet, northern part of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Antique

Monday, June 12

  • 100-200 mm: Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan
  • 50-100 mm: Abra, Benguet, Occidental Mindoro, northern part of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands

Tuesday, June 13

  • 50-100 mm: Ilocos Region, Apayao, Abra, Zambales, Bataan

Floods and landslides are possible.

The southwest monsoon may also bring gusts, or sudden and strong winds, to these areas:

Sunday, June 11

  • Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas

Monday, June 12

  • Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, northern mainland Palawan, Calamian Islands, Cuyo Islands, Kalayaan Islands, Bicol, Western Visayas

PAGASA said Chedeng’s effect on the southwest monsoon will lessen as it moves further away from PAR, but a frontal system north of extreme Northern Luzon “will continue to mainly enhance the southwest monsoon from Tuesday (June 13) onwards and affect most of Luzon, especially the western and extreme northern portions.”

That means rain and gusty conditions due to the enhanced southwest monsoon may persist Tuesday onwards, even after Chedeng’s exit.

Chedeng is the Philippines’ third tropical cyclone for 2023 and the first for June. PAGASA earlier estimated there would be one or two tropical cyclones during the month.

Chedeng’s maximum sustained winds increased from 130 kilometers per hour to 150 km/h, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 5 am bulletin on Saturday.

The typhoon’s gustiness is now up to 185 km/h from the previous 160 km/h.

It was last spotted 875 kilometers east of Northern Luzon, slowly moving north northwest and staying far from Philippine landmass.

Given Chedeng’s distance from land, it is not bringing rain to any part of the country and tropical cyclone wind signals are unlikely to be raised.

But the typhoon is still causing moderate to rough seas in the seaboards of extreme Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of mainland Northern Luzon. Waves could be 2 to 3.5 meters high.

PAGASA advised small vessels to take precautionary measures.

The weather bureau also noted that Chedeng could enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat, which may bring occasional rain to the western parts of Luzon and the Visayas in the next three days.

In PAGASA’s 4 am daily forecast, it said the following areas would have scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon on Saturday:

  • Metro Manila
  • Pangasinan
  • Zambales
  • Bataan
  • Cavite
  • Batangas
  • Occidental Mindoro
  • Palawan
  • Western Visayas

Floods and landslides are possible during periods of moderate to heavy rain.

The southwest monsoon may also bring gusts, or sudden and strong winds, to these areas:

Saturday, June 10

  • Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Zambales, Bataan, Visayas, Camiguin, Dinagat Islands

Sunday, June 11

Chedeng is projected to move north or north northeast on Saturday, before speeding up northeast toward the sea southeast and east of Japan’s Ryukyu Islands on Sunday, June 11.

It is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility between late Sunday evening or early Monday morning, June 12.

PAGASA added that Chedeng may maintain its strength throughout the weekend before starting to weaken on Monday, but slight intensification on Saturday is not ruled out.

Chedeng is the Philippines’ third tropical cyclone for 2023 and the first for June. PAGASA earlier estimated there would be one or two tropical cyclones during the month.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11 am bulletin on Friday that Chedeng was already 920 kilometers east of Northern Luzon.

The typhoon is moving north northwest at 10 kilometers per hour (km/h) and is “approaching the period where it will be closest to the country.” Overall, though, it will remain far from Philippine landmass.

Chedeng still has maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h and gustiness of up to 160 km/h.

Since the typhoon is far from land, it is not causing rain in any part of the country and tropical cyclone wind signals are unlikely to be raised.

But PAGASA said Chedeng may trigger moderate to rough seas in the seaboards of extreme Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of mainland Northern Luzon. Waves could be 2 to 3.5 meters high.

PAGASA advised small vessels to take precautionary measures.

The weather bureau also noted that Chedeng could enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat, which may bring occasional rain to parts of southwestern Luzon, particularly the following areas:

Saturday, June 10

  • Occidental Mindoro, Calamian Islands, northwestern part of Antique (Caluya)

Sunday, June 11

  • Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, northern part of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo islands, Antique

Floods and landslides are possible, warned PAGASA.

The southwest monsoon may also bring gusts, or sudden and strong winds, to these areas:

Friday, June 9

  • Visayas, Romblon, Occidental Mindoro, northern part of Palawan including Kalayaan, Calamian, and Cuyo islands, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Camiguin

Sunday, June 11

  • Western Visayas, Northern Samar, Mimaropa, Bicol, Calabarzon, Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Aurora, Benguet

Chedeng is projected to move northwest for the rest of Friday, before turning north or north northeast on Saturday, June 10.

Then Chedeng may speed up northeast toward the sea south of Japan on Sunday, June 11.

It is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday, June 12.

PAGASA also said Chedeng may reach a peak intensity of 140 km/h within 24 to 36 hours. It could start weakening afterwards, but is seen to remain a typhoon.

Chedeng is the Philippines’ third tropical cyclone for 2023 and the first for June. PAGASA earlier estimated there would be one or two tropical cyclones during the month.

Chedeng was last spotted 915 kilometers east of Central Luzon, moving west northwest at a slightly slower 10 kilometers per hour from the previous 15 km/h.

The typhoon intensified further, with its maximum sustained winds increasing from 120 km/h to 130 km/h. Its gustiness is now up to 160 km/h from the previous 150 km/h.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reiterated in a press briefing past 11 pm on Thursday that Chedeng has no direct effect on the country since it is staying far from land.

The typhoon is not bringing rain and tropical cyclone wind signals are unlikely to be raised. Coastal waters are not affected, too.

But PAGASA said the enhanced southwest monsoon may trigger occasional rain in parts of southwestern Luzon, particularly the following areas:

Saturday, June 10

  • Occidental Mindoro, Calamian Islands, and Caluya, Antique

Sunday, June 11

  • Occidental Mindoro, northern part of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo islands, and Antique

Gusts, or sudden and strong winds, are also possible in these areas due to the southwest monsoon:

Friday, June 9

  • Visayas, Romblon, Occidental Mindoro, northern part of Palawan including Kalayaan, Calamian, and Cuyo islands, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Camiguin

Saturday, June 10

Sunday, June 11

  • Western Visayas, Northern Samar, Mimaropa, Bicol, Calabarzon, Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Aurora, Benguet

Chedeng is expected to turn northwest on Friday, June 9, and north or north northeast on Saturday, June 10. During this period, the typhoon could reach its peak intensity.

Then Chedeng may speed up north northeast or northeast, before eventually leaving the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Sunday evening, June 11, or Monday morning, June 12.

While on its way out of PAR on Sunday, the typhoon may also start weakening, PAGASA said.

Chedeng is the Philippines’ third tropical cyclone for 2023 and the first for June. PAGASA earlier estimated there would be one or two tropical cyclones during the month.

Chedeng becomes a typhoon, remains far from Philippine landmass https://www.rappler.com/nation/weather/typhoon-chedeng-update-pagasa-forecast-june-8-2023-5pm/ https://www.rappler.com/nation/weather/typhoon-chedeng-update-pagasa-forecast-june-8-2023-5pm/#respond Thu, 08 Jun 2023 18:40:55 +0800 MANILA, Philippines – Chedeng (Guchol) strengthened from a severe tropical storm into a typhoon on Thursday afternoon, June 8, but it continues to spare the Philippines from rain and winds as it remains far from land.

Chedeng’s maximum sustained winds increased from 100 kilometers per hour to 120 km/h, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in a bulletin issued at 5 pm on Thursday.

The typhoon’s gustiness is now up to 150 km/h from the previous 125 km/h.

PAGASA sees Chedeng steadily intensifying in the next two to three days. It may reach its peak intensity by Saturday, June 10.

As of Thursday afternoon, the typhoon was located 935 kilometers east of Central Luzon, moving northwest at 15 km/h.

Since Chedeng is far from land, it is not bringing rain to any part of the country and tropical cyclone wind signals are unlikely to be raised. Coastal waters are not affected, too.

But the typhoon could enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat, which may bring gusts, or sudden and strong winds, to these areas:

Friday, June 9

  • Visayas, Romblon, Occidental Mindoro, northern part of Palawan including Kalayaan, Calamian, and Cuyo islands, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Camiguin

Saturday, June 10

  • Visayas, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Camiguin, Dinagat Islands

As for potential monsoon rain, the timing and intensity would depend on how Chedeng enhances the southwest monsoon. The typhoon’s movement and intensity will be taken into account.

If PAGASA sees “an increasing chance” of heavy monsoon rain in the next three days, a weather advisory would be released.

In the meantime, Palawan will still see scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon until Friday, June 9. The rest of the country will only have isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms.

Chedeng is projected to move west northwest to northwest until Friday afternoon, before shifting more toward the north for the rest of Friday until Saturday afternoon.

It is expected to be slow-moving until Saturday, but could speed up toward the north northeast or northeast on Sunday, June 11.

At that rate, it would exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Monday morning, June 12.

Chedeng is the Philippines’ third tropical cyclone for 2023 and the first for June. PAGASA earlier estimated there would be one or two tropical cyclones during the month.

Severe Tropical Storm Chedeng gains strength over Philippine Sea https://www.rappler.com/nation/weather/severe-tropical-storm-chedeng-update-pagasa-forecast-june-8-2023-11am/ https://www.rappler.com/nation/weather/severe-tropical-storm-chedeng-update-pagasa-forecast-june-8-2023-11am/#respond Thu, 08 Jun 2023 12:30:00 +0800 MANILA, Philippines – Severe Tropical Storm Chedeng (Guchol) slightly intensified as it continued moving over the Philippine Sea on Thursday morning, June 8.

In its 11 am bulletin on Thursday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Chedeng now has maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour from the previous 95 km/h.

The severe tropical storm’s gustiness increased to 125 km/h from 115 km/h.

PAGASA expects Chedeng to keep strengthening in the next two to three days. It could be upgraded to a typhoon by Thursday night or Friday, June 9, then reach its peak intensity by Saturday, June 10.

Chedeng also slightly accelerated on Thursday morning, heading west northwest at 15 km/h from 10 km/h.

It was last spotted 1,070 kilometers east of Central Luzon, still too far to have a direct effect on the country.

PAGASA said Chedeng remains unlikely to directly bring rain to any part of the country in the next three to five days.

The raising of tropical cyclone wind signals is also still unlikely, and coastal waters are not affected.

But Chedeng might enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat in the next few days. The southwest monsoon could bring gusts, or sudden and strong winds, to these areas:

Friday, June 9

  • Visayas, Romblon, Occidental Mindoro, northern part of Palawan including Kalayaan, Calamian, and Cuyo islands, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Camiguin

Saturday, June 10

  • Visayas, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Camiguin, Dinagat Islands

As for potential monsoon rain, the timing and intensity would depend on how Chedeng enhances the southwest monsoon. The severe tropical storm’s movement and intensity will be taken into account.

If PAGASA sees “an increasing chance” of heavy monsoon rain in the next three days, a weather advisory would be released.

For now, the southwest monsoon will continue causing scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in Palawan. The rest of the country will only have isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms.

Chedeng is projected to move west northwest to northwest from Thursday to Friday, before shifting more toward the north on Friday evening.

Afterwards, it is expected to be slow-moving until Saturday, followed by acceleration toward the north northeast or northeast on Sunday, June 11.

At that rate, it would exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Monday morning, June 12.
