MANILA, Philippines – It’s a story of young love. Sexual awakening. Heartbreak.

If you’ve never read Ligo na U, Lapit na Me or watched its film adaptation, now is your chance to see it on stage – with a twist.

“Ligo na U…” is an examination of postmodern love, relationships, and the way the millennial generation deals with their desires and fears.

Street-smart and ordinary Karl Vladimir Lennon J. Villalobos, aka Intoy, has unwittingly fallen into a friend-with-benefits situation with his rich, mysterious, and quirky classmate Jenny. Slowly, as they explore and discover each other’s anatomy, Jenny opens up to Intoy, revealing the vulnerable center to her seemingly impervious facade. But poor, confused Intoy isn’t really equipped to deal with the feelings – and surprises – involved.

The play will run from March 8 to 11 at the NCAS Auditorium of UP Los Baños. “Ligo na U…” is written and directed by Eljay Castro Deldoc, together with direction by Joe Garcia and musical direction by Yuri Sta. Maria.

Shows will be at 4 pm and 7 pm. Tickets are priced at P130. For inquiries, visit Tabsing Kolektib’s official page. – Rappler.com

This is an announcement from the DLSU Eco Car Team

MANILA, Philippines – Lasallian eco cars Archer and Delta take center stage in Best U Launch.

Best U Launch is DLSU ECT’s (Eco Car Team) official event, showcasing their fuel-efficient eco car designs before the Shell Eco-Marathon, and helps raise interest and awareness about fuel-efficiency and alternative energy.

Archer is fielded in the battery electric urban concept category, and Delta in the gasoline urban concept. Both entries have won several medals throughout their three-year competition stint.

“Our goal for this event is for Eco Car Team to be more known in the community, and to show to other students that there are ways non-engineering students can also help in the team.” expressed psychology major Florence Culaba, the launch’s project head.

Passion, commitment, teamwork

ECT Alumnus Gian Paul Giron recalled seeing the cars for the first time in his freshman year.

“…[upperclassmen] said join the Eco Car Team. In my High School, we didn’t have any activities like that, so I was really excited.”

It takes at least 9 months to a full year of working round the clock to get the cars done, along with “having to learn a lot of things on our own,” said GR, Archer’s senior electrical manager. He also added that their advisers, “…guides and pushes us to our limits,” fueling their competitive spirit further.

What made him stay was that the team is “…a place for people who want to make something and have it work… makes you collaborate and make something big.”

Mico Flores, junior member for Delta, joined because of his love and curiosity for cars, getting involved “to think of better ways to improve fuel efficiency for the potential of gasoline.”

Challenges and setbacks like deadlines and postponed plans are all worth it as the team’s hard work pays off with every successful test run and improvement, not to mention the exhilaration from winning international competitions such as the Shell Eco-Marathon.

While most members come from engineering disciplines, DLSU ECT also welcomes non-engineering majors into the fold. Current members are students from programs like psychology and physics, who are a great help to the team.

Efficiency and speed

Unlike most races, Shell Eco-Marathon isn’t all about speed. Competitors must strike a balance between speed and fuel-efficiency.

“You can be so fast to finish the track, but the car may not be as [fuel] efficient… Or consume lesser gas but the speed may not be practical to finish the race,” Giron recounted.

Cars competing in the Shell Eco-Marathon must finish ten laps under 29 minutes.

He recalled past victories: Delta’s 126 Km./L record snagged first place in 2015’s Shell Eco-Marathon, while Archer’s 62 KwH/Km placed second in 2014. The team’s hard at work to make both cars win in their respective categories this year.

Future of Eco Cars

With Archer and Delta retiring after a fruitful 3-year run, Jeffrey Dizon, Delta’s team leader, is hopeful for upcoming changes in the team. He is looking forward to joining more categories for the competition, and designing new cars next year.

Mico Flores wants to see more fuel-efficient vehicles in the future, recognizing that development should move beyond single-seater vehicles. He hopes that in the near future, more people will use eco-friendly cars.

They urge Filipinos to support not just their entries, but all of the Filipinos from other schools who are competing.

“We hope that Filipinos show support to these schools, these are young engineers, hindi lang DLSU ang nagco-compete (It is not just DLSU that competes),” Culaba stressed.

Best U Launch was held on February 10, at the Henry Sy, Sr grounds.

Cheer on DLSU and cars from other Philippine schools by watching the Shell Eco-Marathon from March 3 to 6, at the Luneta Park Circuit, Quirino Grandstand, Manila. – Rappler.com

This is a press release from Hult Prize.

MANILA, Philippines – For the first time, De La Salle University has been selected to host the campus edition of the Hult Prize competition. This year, students will address the president’s challenge on crowded urban spaces and go head-to-head for the $1,000,000 (P47.14 million) Hult prize.

This initiative is led by Campus Director Darrel Francis Luistro who is also a graduating Financial Management student of the university.

The Hult Prize, also known as the “Nobel Prize for Students,” is a start-up accelerator for budding young social entrepreneurs emerging from the best universities worldwide. It is the world’s largest student competition and crowdsourcing platform for social good.

It has also been regarded as one of the top 5 ideas changing the world by President Bill Clinton and TIME Magazine. Millenials around the world are challenged to develop innovative social enterprises that tackle grave issues faced by billions of people around the world. Winners receive $1 million in seed capital as well as mentorship and advice from the international business community.

The 2016 President’s Challenge is focused on addressing the problem of crowded urban spaces, an issue specifically chosen by President Clinton. Solving the problem can be done by generating income through connecting people, products, capital and services.

Addressing the global issue is important since there are almost 1.5 billion people living in crowded spaces worldwide. People are unable to make enough money, reach their destinations, and are living in unsafe spaces lacking infrastructure and access to basic services.

In the words of Clinton, “The Hult Prize is an exceptional example of how young people from all over the world have turned out, in mass, to build solutions that aim to solve some of the world’s most difficult challenges.”

On 11 December, the Hult Prize at De La Salle University Grand Finals will be held at the Natividad Fajardo-Rosario Gonzalez Auditorium in the Bro. Andrew Gonzalez Building of the university.

From more than 30 teams coming from DLSU’s undergraduate, graduate and PhD programs that applied, the final Top 12 teams have been selected and will pitch their start-up ideas in front of an elite panel of judges.

The winner of the first Hult Prize at DLSU will automatically advance to compete in one of the 5 regional locations such as Shanghai, Dubai, London, San Francisco and Boston.

The final event is open to outsiders as audience members. Audience members will not only get to witness the Top 12 Teams with their final pitch but also participate in the exciting activities throughout the day. – Rappler.com
